The Impeccable Ally
Numerous organizations are actively engaging in courageous conversations about race and implementing anti-racist practices. However, as leaders, it's crucial to grasp how the interplay of human bias and the prevailing white/Eurocentric norms can inadvertently foster a subtly hostile environment for People of Color.
Before we get to policy change, we must begin with the impressions (Impression Management) we make in day-to-day conversation. Even using seemingly benign common phrases and assumptions (Discourse that Disconnects) can inadvertently cultivate a sense of mistrust, dampen morale, and lead to a decline in productivity.
Examining the connection between human evolution, contemporary cognitive patterns (Unearthing Bias), and their contribution to racial inequity can help dismantle structural, interpersonal, and internalized racism. By deconstructing these patterns, we can pave the way for transformative culture change (Five-Step Plan to Build Trust) that fosters belonging and aids in the retention of racial diversity.
